INCIDENTALIA is a new series of projects initiated by CINNNAMON that aim to bring together the curatorial sharpness of our gallery shows with the thrust of art fair presentations, while tapping into the low-key guerilla tactics of artist run projects. INCIDENTALIA can take place anytime anywhere, allowing for a spontaneous and energetic approach to exhibition making, without compromising on quality or focus.

In our first off-site presentation in 2021 we bring together the works of three of our artists - Matthew Allen, Micha Patiniott, and Riette Wanders. The work of these three could not be more different. What they share in their work is a whim of reinvented Romanticism.

Matthew Allen creates monochrome works of graphite on canvas. Reflecting the surrounding light, these works emanate the sublime, even in their modesty.

Equally modest, Micha Patiniott’s recent paintings reduce the sublimity of nature to painterly gestures. A clearing in the forest, a mountain top and a sunset are Romantic themes, yet in the hands of Patiniott they unironically warp into comically surreal images, simultaneously ethereal and earthy.

The work of Riette Wanders celebrates an energetic individuality.  Finding their origin in charcoal drawings, the deep blacks and contrasting whites of her work are like thumping rhythms, pairing clarity and spontaneity.

INCIDENTALIA #1 will be presented online as part of the Art Brussels Week viewing room on ARTSY
from 1–14 June.
